10 Things I Hate About You - Spring - Kimberly A. Tillman

‘I guess in this society being male and an asshole makes you worthy of our time’

A strong feminist female lead, Heath Ledger serenade and one of the niche sect of rom coms based on Shakespeare - 10 Things I Hate About You is highly underrated. On top of this it was released in 1999 and costume designed by Kimberly A. Tilman of Clueless fame, meaning it also falls into the perfect mix of nineties and noughties fashion.

You don't have to be who they want you to be you know'

'I happen to like being adored thank you'

Feminist dichotomy Though many characters in this film, including both Kat and Bianca's best friends, are great style inspo, the sister's wardrobes are particularly fantastic as they represent, just like their characters, two polar facets of feminism. Though Kat's khakis, unfussy staples and maroon knee length skirts might be seen to be more stereotypically feminist - not dressing to a particularly feminine colour palette or shape - it is no more so than Bianca's wardrobe, which though more traditionally feminine, she wears just as much for herself as Kat. Showing that, borrowing the title of Scarlett Curtis's collection of essays on the subject, its a myth that 'feminists don't wear pink' and women don't have to conform to the stereotypes this movie highlights. Dressing for yourself it what is most important, whatever style that may be.

Extras

Female Canon It is inexplicable and hopefully redundant that Kat gets sent out of class for complaining about studying historically misogynist authors such as Hemingway instead of 'Silvia Plath, or Charlottle Brontë, or Simone de Beauvoir’ - something that has hardly changed in school reading lists since 1999. So here's an alternative curriculum to consider instead.

'Why should I live up to other people's expectations instead of my own'

Literary-Inspired Rom Coms This is one of the inexplicable thought brilliant niche of nineties and noughties rom coms inspired by classic literature. Another film taking cues from Shakespeare include She's the Man, and those inspired by Jane Austen include Clueless and Bridget Jones's Diary. When next looking for a movie its worth looking into this rarely recognised genre.

'That must be Nigel with the brie'
